Summary of a message left for the Patient Experience Team

A patient said she was in town for a family emergency and ended up needing to go to the hospital herself. Because of the care provided, she decided to extend her stay in the area after discharge to get follow up care through Intermountain. She said she has never received such exceptional care in a hospital before like she did at Platte Valley. She wanted to send her many thanks to the staff who cared for her, and she mentioned Dr. Ryan Klemt, Dr. Jeffrey Rickard, and Dr. Amanda Jo Mika by name.

An email sent by a colleague

The ICU has a patient who is not going to survive. We have exhausted all avenues and there is nothing we can do to save his life. He is continuing to deteriorate. Multiple physicians from hospitalists to intensivists to neurologists have spoken with the family, but the family has left each conversation with false hope. They haven't been able to accept that their loved one has only days to live. Dr. Brandon Teska had the most tender, compassionate, direct and truthful conversation with the family. Dr. Teska made sure to offer support to each family member and he gave opportunity for each one to ask questions. He spent over an hour with the family making sure each one completely understood what he was saying. The family is finally able to come to grips with the reality of the situation and properly say their goodbyes.

Feedback from our nurses

  • Dr. Robert Wester is amazing. I love that he does rounds with the nurses on postpartum to collaborate on patient care and ensure we are all aligned. He listens to both the nursing staff and patients to truly provide compassionate, patient-centered care.

  • I would like to recognize Dr. Hayley Thompson. During patient rounds, patients consistently share how wonderful this physician is, noting the time taken to connect with them and how meaningful that care feels. One patient in particular described Dr. Thompson sitting on the bed, holding the patient’s hand. The patient became tearful while explaining the deep connection that moment created and described it as very kind and thoughtful.

  • Dr. Esther Min is always pleasant to work with. She is kind to the staff as well as the patients she cares for. In all the years I have worked alongside of her I have yet to see her mistreat or be mean toward anyone. In stressful and emergent situations, she maintains her calmness and speaks with clarity which helps the rest of the team remain calm and work together in the same manner. I would like her to know how much our L&D team on the night shift appreciates her and all that she does.

Thank you to these physicians and all members of our medical staff who provide excellent care and collaboration every day. Our sincere thanks also to everyone who’s taken a moment to fill out our Dr. Kudos form and recognize a physician or APP for their expertise, leadership or support.
