Lutheran celebrates first Magnet redesignation, a milestone in nursing excellence
Lutheran has achieved a significant milestone by receiving its first Magnet redesignation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This prestigious recognition is the nation's highest honor for nursing excellence and is a testament to the hospital's outstanding safety and innovative care for patients.
The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American Academy of Nursing to highlight hospitals that attract and retain top nursing professionals. Magnet facilities demonstrate excellence in five key areas: transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, empirical outcomes and new knowledge, innovations and improvements.
Lutheran has been Magnet designated for four years, and this redesignation marks a significant event for the nursing community and the hospital as a whole. Achieving Magnet designation is not just a recognition; it signifies the highest level of excellence in nursing practice.
To achieve Magnet designation, a hospital must have strong support from its leadership, demonstrate a high standard of nursing excellence, including nurse education and professional development, and show ongoing quality improvements and enhanced patient outcomes. This involves interprofessional collaboration, evidence of patient-centered care, data collection and analysis of patient outcomes, and staff satisfaction.
“I am incredibly proud of the Lutheran nursing division and our allied partners for their relentless dedication in achieving our first Magnet redesignation,” said Reagan Goodnight, chief nursing officer. “The principles of Magnet have truly become ingrained in our practice and culture, shaping the compassionate care we provide our patients every day. The Magnet redesignation also highlights our commitment to professional development. We believe that investing in our team's growth is essential to providing the highest quality of care. I eagerly look forward to witnessing the ongoing quality, safety and practice achievements that Lutheran will continue to bring to our community for years to come. Together, we are elevating nursing excellence and making a lasting impact.”
Being a Magnet-designated hospital is no easy feat. It requires a comprehensive commitment to excellence in patient care, nursing practice and leadership, supported by data-driven improvements and a focus on collaboration. The nurses at Lutheran have shown exceptional dedication and hard work to achieve this recognition. Physicians who work with a nurse they feel embodies this excellence are encouraged to nominate their colleague for our 2025 Nurse of the Year Award.
