Simplified, uniform, in-person psychiatric consultation services

The Behavioral Health Service line is excited to share that all Front Range hospitals, independent of status with the joint venture, will now have access to simplified, uniform and in-person psychiatric consultation services. Beginning on Monday, Nov. 2, all Front Range hospital practitioners will be able to use a single order in Epic to request psychiatric consultations for inpatient and emergency department patients who have complex medical-psychiatric needs.

You are encouraged to request consultation for conditions such as:

  • Delirium/Altered mental status.

  • Catatonia.

  • Psychosis.

  • Mania.

  • Complex medication management.

  • Substance-use disorder.

  • Any psychiatric presentation that complicates medical treatment.

The Psychiatry Consult Service will be available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. The consult service will be unavailable on evenings, weekends and holidays. To place an order for a Psychiatry Consult please do the following:

  1. In Epic, place an order for Behavioral Consult.

  2. After the order is placed, call to speak with the psychiatrist on call to review the case. The centralized Psychiatry Consult Number is (303) 265-2010.

  3. The psychiatrist will then triage the case to the appropriate psychiatric clinician to see your patient.

After hours, please place the consult order in Epic and send an Epic Chat message, with the chart attached and your clinical question to the following provider group:

“Please remember that every hospital still has access to a Behavioral Health Team for both the Emergency Department and medical floors to respond to crisis, safety, suicide risk and involuntary hold assessments,” said Ryan Jackman, MD, senior medical director, Behavioral Health Service Line. “Additionally, these teams will continue to respond to provide substance use support, address positive screens to ASQ, EPDS, TAPS and assist with behavioral health specific disposition needs. The Psychiatry Consult service is not replacing these teams or their roles but rather will be working in close collaboration with your hospital's Behavioral Health team. Each hospital Behavioral Health team has its own telephone number that can be called. This number will be listed in the Consult to Behavioral Health specific to the hospital where the order is being placed.”

He continued, “As a service line, we look forward to working with each of your care sites, our psychiatry team, and behavioral health teams to improve the care that each patient with co-occurring mental health and medical conditions receives. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your onsite teams or to us with questions.”

Medical staff members with questions can call the centralized line or contact Jackman at ryan.jackman@imail.org.
