St. Vincent Robotics Hub Lauded for Innovation

by Abigail Huelse, RN

St. Vincent Regional Hospital was recently honored with the 2025 Innovation in Healthcare Award by the Montana Hospital Association for our groundbreaking Robotics Hub Project.

Jeff Rentz, MD, a general surgeon and Medical Director of the Robotic Surgery Program at St. Vincent Regional Hospital, accepted the award on behalf of the hospital.

“The Robotics Hub is more than just a technological advancement – it’s a commitment to improving outcomes, expanding access, and shaping the future of healthcare in our communities,” said Rentz.

This physician-led initiative, spearheaded by Rentz, is transforming surgical care across Montana and beyond by enabling real-time, remote collaboration during robotic-assisted surgeries. Through the Robotics Hub, expert surgeons at St. Vincent can virtually proctor and consult with providers in rural and regional hospitals—bringing world-class expertise directly into operating rooms across the state.

Since its launch in late 2023, the Hub has connected surgical teams from Montana to Wyoming, and even as far as Virginia and Illinois, fostering a spirit of collaboration and continuous learning. By reducing the need for patient travel and expanding access to advanced procedures, the Robotics Hub is helping patients receive high-quality care closer to home – from Montana and beyond.

“By being able to proctor and assist with surgeries remotely, surgeons can view, train, and contribute during robotic surgeries in more home communities,” said Rentz. “This allows for more physician expertise in the room, providing better care for patients where they are, eliminating the financial impact associated with patient travel cost for necessary medical surgeries.”

This award recognizes not only our commitment to innovation but also our dedication to making healthcare more accessible, equitable, and compassionate for all communities we serve.
